“Āwāye Khiāl” (Voice of Imagination) is the title of a music album for tombak solo that was released in 2000 by Navid Afghah. The release of this album—which includes nine pieces titled Pezhvak, Ro’ya, Sama, Toghian, Ezterab, Tarabangiz, Sarmast, Sham-o Parvaneh, and Canon for Two Hands—had a deep and widespread impact on the course of classical tombak playing.

In this album, Navid Afghah, in his first independent work, presents his emerging ideas for the tombak—ideas that he had already introduced in his performances and unofficial recordings from 1990 to the mid-1990s. To this day, this work has become a primary auditory model for many tombak players, both for practicing the instrument and for exploring this complex, beautiful, and innovative style of tombak performance. The purpose of writing this book is an attempt to reach the mental structures behind this work.

The pieces and ideas presented in this album can be considered a condensed representation of Navid Afghah’s musical language. In this collection, I have attempted a prescriptive-descriptive transcription of the album’s pieces, which, in my view, tends more toward the prescriptive.

A part of the book includes a stylistic analysis of Navid Afghah’s works, taken from my MA thesis back at the University of Tehran (2021). The notation section and the stylistic analysis section begin from the left and right sides of the book, respectively. I hope this work will be useful for its players and readers.
